Letters of recommendation; letters from applicants requesting appointments; and, if they were appointed, notifications from the War Department and acceptances by the candidates containing statements of consent signed by parents or guardians. In some instances these papers contain a considerable amount of information concerning the family background of the applicant.

West Point, N.Y., was originally utilized as a strategic defense location during the American Revolution. West Point is geographically located on a 100 ft. plateau overlooking the Hudson River.
